Icing cakes!

I have inadvertently volunteered to make a cake for a function. I have never properly iced a cake before. I have done a bit of research but my main two questions are:
1 Can I use Delia's recipe for fondant icing in a mould?
2 Could I use a place a moulded marzipan shape on top of the marzipaned cake and then ice (with royal icing)? Or do you think the icing would just make the moulded shape look like a blob?
